What platform does Lurn Academy use?
Posted by Herbert on October 1, 2022 at 5:22 amI have been looking at different platforms for delivering online courses and coaching and I was wondering which platform Lurn Academy uses? Not that I would automatically use it, but would help in understanding what the platform promises as we can see here what it delivers here.

Hey Herbert,
This is my guess of what Learn Academy is using, so don’t take this as the official answer unless the Lurn crew can confirm the following:
It looks like Lurn Academy is a WordPress website using the LearnDash plugin (for courses), the BuddyBoss plugin (for the groups/forums) and GamiPress plugin (for the coin earning system).
Personally, I have been researching different platforms and systems myself and came across the aforementioned as a possibility, except I will be using Tutor LMS instead of LearnDash. And when I am ready, I will go this route as I’m building my own courses, coaching and community system.
Keep in mind that this is not the cheapest or easiest for non-techies.
The LearnDash and BuddyBoss plugins alone will cost $427 together for 1 website per year. GamiPress has free features, but the all-access pass for the pro add-ons is $199 per year for 1 site, totaling $626 for 1 site per year with the other two mentioned plugins.
I purchased a Lifetime license for the Tutor LMS plugin and also the BuddyBoss plugin during Black Friday. November is just around the corner, so for anyone interested, sign up to their email list and see if they will have Black Friday LTD deals this year. I don’t know if they will or not, but it is worth mentioning.
I designed WordPress websites for fun and have been paid to do it for others. I’m familiar with it and really like it, so it’s one of the primary reasons why I’m going with this for myself.
If you consider yourself a non-techie, I wouldn’t go with this when you are first starting out. With this route, there are a lot of details and moving-parts involved, and you have to be a real tech nerd with an enjoyment of figuring this stuff out to do this solo. You can always hire a tech team later and migrate to something like what Lurn Academy is using (or what I think they are using) if you know for sure this is what you would like for your business.
Just my 2 cents. Hope it helps some.

Hi Aimee,
I really enjoyed your extensive reply. I was not expecting such awesome detail. It was really helpful in giving me a sense of what can be involved, depending on the route chosen. Which is what I was after.
So that really helped me decide that I am looking for an “out of the box” solution, as I want to focus on other areas of this project that I need to develop skills in that cannot be bought on-line.
With gratitude and appreciation,
Herbert

Hey @Herbert I think @AimeeBeth has given some great food for thought. Here at Lurn we teach the Just Good Enough (JGE) principle with getting started. So if you don’t have experience with more advanced tools like WordPress it might be easier to get started with a tool like Clickfunnels or one of the other funnel building tools we suggest in the resources: with https://docs.google.com/document/d/1DL6fSTdu9QYAJ7ghBRW57hGhMg-uNH0taoYRwx3lkN4/edit#heading=h.wzph8u4bqzg5 or the lesson on How to Build a Funnel: https://academy.lurn.com/lessons/how-do-you-build-a-funnel/

Hi Dasha,
thanks for your thoughts. I am not fully understanding the fuller context of them. Lets try and work this through please. I agree with the approach of Just Good Enough. I also want to ensure that things are done in an effective way, so I do need to make some good decisions on certain aspects. I have gone through the funnels modules and sort of get it, enough to give me some feel for where they fit in and what to do (with lots more to get under my belt).
So my first project involves a course with the option of coaching attached. In which case I believe I need to find a place to put my course that supports the putting up and use of the course in an effective manner (hence my question on gamification) and any other marketing support that may be on offer with whoever I choose. Once that is sort of resolved, then I need to swing back to the funnels and other aspects of marketing and develop them further.
Does this make sense or should I be looking at this differently.
Cheers
Herbert

Hey Herbert,
Yes, it makes sense I understand you are at the stage of deciding to choose a funnel building and learning management system for your course. Have you thought about having a look at the user interface and seeing which one resonates with you of the tools listed in the resources section: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1DL6fSTdu9QYAJ7ghBRW57hGhMg-uNH0taoYRwx3lkN4/edit#

Hi Dasha,
yes I am working my way through that list and also taking a few interesting detours when I come across something that seems to make sense. Its about generating options and understanding pro’s and con’s. So any input is appreciated.
Cheers

Hey Herbert, the main platform we use for Lurn Academy is Buddy Boss.
This document has a bunch of options for LMS systems: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1DL6fSTdu9QYAJ7ghBRW57hGhMg-uNH0taoYRwx3lkN4/edit?usp=sharing
